Thunder Bay Has Been Googled!
If all roads lead to Rome, then all cyber pathways lead to Google.
Thunder Bay has been Googled! What that means is, the result, the aftermath of the success of Google, and the Internet, has diminished the need for newsprint around the world. Thunder Bay is a land of resources - timber being a primary resource and newsprint is the manufactured product. Paper mills are down? Google it! We are in the Internet wake, and we have to wake up!
No one is reading the newspaper anymore! Well, not no one, but readership is certainly diminishing and local. The diminishment of newsprint demand has been coming since the Internet became a successful commercial media avenue. Google is the most successful company at using the Internet to its advantage.
I'm sorry, but Google is not your friend. Google is a business entity trying (successfully) to gobble up every aspect of media in the world. No matter what phrase is searched for, Google gets paid, controls the outcomes and controls its competitors as it diversifies its interests.
We have to compete at the Provincial, National and International levels for ALL things. We have to compete with Google! Our economy has to be transformed. Our city is in transformation. We need tourist and shopping dollars. We are remote. I believe it is necessary to target an audience outside the city. The Internet will allow Thunder Bay commercial business to target an audience in another town, province or country. Thunder Bay can reach out to a larger Internet market. If the market remains responsive, no matter where that market is found, Thunder Bay remains a vibrant community for business. Reaching out to China and India seems like a very logical step in finding an audience for our goods and services. At the very least, attracting Internet attention from Toronto / USA as a cottage destination for flyers. Maybe our goods and services need to change? That is part of the necessary transformation of our city.
Possibly we need to load up for the tourism dollar, promote the "Thunder" in Thunder Bay. Few cities can make that kind of noise! Our natural advantages are tremendous. Our isolation is advantageous. Our new market has to come by air or be accessible via the Internet. Coming to Thunder Bay by automobile is too expensive. We have to become an air destination. Our new products have to be able to ship by air. Quality Thunder Bay arts & crafts meet this criteria. Our services have to be developed, our tourism dollars well spent, skiing, the Sleeping Giant, outdoors, Kakabeka Falls, golf, fishing and gambling a focus as well as the rest of the surrounding natural beauty.
